PRODUCT HIGHLIGHT

TIDAL TOOLS 2.0

This month we’ve released several new features in Tidal Tools, our CLI utility that’s used for all sorts of migration discovery and analysis tasks.

One of these updates is a new and improved integration with vSphere for server discovery. Now, by default, Tidal Tools will collect the Hostname, FQDN, Operating System details, RAM and Storage data, CPU details, IP Addresses and more, all with one simple command.

There have also been a lot of improvements to existing commands—you can now easily perform source code analysis on an internet air-gapped device and upload the results in a subsequent command. We also made several improvements and fixes to small issues in manipulating infrastructure datasets via the API using the sync and API request commands.

Go on and give it a try by installing or updating to the latest version of Tidal Tools right on your laptop!

  • Linux vets unite behind CIQ, Rocky Linux’s founding sponsor - Much like your favourite boxer ascending to the top of the steps, our old friend Linux is climbing to the cloud with new distribution Rocky Linux. To get there, they’ve got some real help from the leaders of the newer CIQ, namely, Gregory M. Kurtzer, a creator of CentOS, the popular Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) cloneCIQ is to Rocky Linux as Red Hat is to RHEL. Should be a fun climb!
  • Dig scoops up $34M to tackle the fragmented world of cloud data security - Brace yourselves—corporate data stored in the cloud has now reached 60%. And this wise startup, Dig Security, is doing the important work of tackling the sticky complexity of the security of the matter—and their investors clearly agree!
  • J.P. Morgan seeks cloud payments push with Renovite acquisition - We’re always looking for new ways to pay—and banking giant J.P. Morgan is stepping up, acquiring Renovate, a major contributor to cloud-native payment technology in the United States, India and United Kingdom. Lots of other banks and fintech startups are also looking to the cloud to combat the rising costs of legacy tech in this area.
  • Walmart enters the metaverse with Roblox experiences aimed at younger shoppers - Shoppers under 25: start financing an Oculus—Walmart is now offering two experiences on the gaming platform Roblox to try and experiment with a different kind of engagement with the brand. Rumour has it, you can even test-drive clothes shopping with your avatar. Ready Player 1!
  • Nvidia launches new services for training large language models - AI developers used to have to create large language models (LLMs) from scratch. Get ready to hear a lot more about Nvidia, who created the NeMo LLM Service and BioNeMo LLM Service, which both make it easier to adapt LLMs for text generation and summarization, and also protein structure prediction. That last one will mean a lot for the healthcare sector!

Canada’s Top Growing Companies ranks Canadian companies on three-year revenue growth. Tidal Migrations earned its spot with three-year growth of 582%.

In order to qualify for this voluntary programs; companies had to complete an in-depth application process and fulfill requirements. In total, 430 companies earned a spot on this year’s ranking.   • New – Amazon EC2 M1 Mac Instances - This one’s for the developers out there. EC2 M1 Mac “mini computers” are now generally available! A year after the announcement at re:Invent, these instances now allow you to access machines built around the Apple-designed M1 System on Chip (SoC). Because these connect to the AWS Nitro System, this means faster app builds for Mac products, and access to all the benefits of AWS when re-architecturing apps for Apple Silicone. Now go, create!
  • Microsoft adds ‘Cloud for Sovereignty’ to its line-up - Announced on day 1 of Microsoft’s annual Inspire conference, they’re not stopping at Cloud for Government. Now they’re going worldwide with Cloud for Sovereignty, making it available for government and public sector customers worldwide.
  • Google’s Chrome OS Flex for old PCs and Macs is now out of beta - Can’t let go of that 10-year-old laptop? Then don’t! Google’s trying to do their part by bringing new life to old machines. You can save the planet from more e-waste by loading ChromeOS Flex from a good old fashioned thumb drive onto your old clunker.
  • Tesorio’s tools aim to help businesses automate payments collection - Accounts Receivables, meet AI. Tesorio CEO Carlos Vega wants to automate all those highly manual cash management processes, getting away from spreadsheets as the main tool for companies getting paid.
  • Google Cloud launches its first Arm-based VMs - The industry is listening—AWS was first to the party, creating their own custom chips with the AWS Graviton processor, but Google is coming in hot behind Azure in bringing this concept to the table as well. We’ll soon be hearing a lot about this, but to put it simply, in general, these kinds of VMs help make development processes in the cloud as simple, efficient, and as cost effective as possible.
  • Businesses including Stitch Fix are already experimenting with DALL-E 2 - That (in)famous text-to-image generator is making headlines again, this time in fashion. Personal stylist app and apparel company Stitch Fix can tell DALL-E 2 to generate an image based on a clothing item they want to see, and the idea is for their staff to be able to produce the item from their inventory. Word on the street is it’s still wonky, but think of the possibilities!
  • Google Cloud announces upcoming regions in Malaysia, Thailand and New Zealand - After opening their first region in Mexico last month, Google Cloud’s not stopping there—heading for APAC next (neck and neck with AWS), Google Cloud says the ability for those in the region to deploy cloud services will aid in their journeys to hybrid and multi-cloud environments.

  • How do you process space data and imagery in low earth orbit? - There’s a Snowcone in space—and AWS partnered with Axiom Space to get it there. It seems when the International Space Station retires at the end of the decade, we’ll still be able to perform edge processing on space-based datasets using the edge computing and data transfer device, AWS Snowcone. This will help us continue to learn from research in low Earth orbit, and without latency and bandwidth limitations!
  • Microsoft retires Internet Explorer browser after 26 years - Remember Netscape? Microsoft’s browser Internet Explorer, a close sibling at the time, lasted longer, but was relegated to the browser graveyard in favour of Microsoft Edge this month, their most recent browser that boasts availability for Microsoft, Mac, and even Linux. End of an era.
  • ​​Salesforce takes crypto plunge with new NFT cloud - Need a whole new reason to feel uncool? Salesforce just launched a no-code platform that makes it possible for customers to mint, manage, and sell NFTs, due to an uptick in consumer interest in and demand for these digital assets.
  • Papercup raises $20M for AI that automatically dubs videos - Because everyone should have “The Joy of Painting” in their lives, British startup Papercup’s notable projects include being used to translate 30 seasons of Bob Ross’ iconic show, and they’re not stopping there. They’re rising to meet a high demand for dubbed content all over the world. Seems real folks in the studio are expensive!
  • Microsoft and Meta join Google in using AI to help run their data centers - To address safety concerns as well as the high cost of outages, these giants are investigating more and more sophisticated ways to automate their data centres and make them smart enough to keep the universe running. Simple task, right?

  • Knative becomes a CNCF project - Kubernetes just got a new neighbor in the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF). Knative, which helps users to build, deploy and manage serverless and event-driven applications on top of Kubernetes, is now the new incubating project within the CNCF universe, which will be benefiting from countless contributors besides the already big names who have worked on it (IBM, Red Hat, VMware, to name a few!)
  • Microsoft continues its push to convince more game developers to use Azure - Think these video games are here to stay? Microsoft just launched its Azure Game Development Virtual Machine, and is hoping to make it easier for independent game developers to test and build games in a cloud environment. Rumor has it you can build servers in 5 minutes.
  • AWS launches customized services for game developers - AWS too? We’re sensing a trend—their newly announced package of services is helping gaming companies move operations to the cloud, which is proving to be a service in high demand. Should we all become game developers?
  • Google’s new tools should help your packages arrive on time - Imagine the sheer number of packages worldwide flying around these days. Retailers and logistics companies have to shoulder that weight—and Google Cloud with Google Maps want to lighten the load with their new tools, providing these companies with the workflow updates they’ve sorely needed.
  • Cisco announces new innovations to accelerate hybrid cloud adoption - They’re no fools—to meet the demands that work-from-home has brought to light, Cisco has 3 new updates to help move businesses into hybrid cloud environments, including Intersight platform updates, improved infrastructure, and UCS X-Series improvements.

More to Save On Clouds by Tidal Migrations

If you’re still yet to dive into last month’s launch of our new platform SaveOnClouds, we’ve put together a nifty little walkthrough that is sure to help flesh out the picture of how this tool can keep your cloud costs under control.

We’ve also introduced an update making it easier to connect your Google, AWS, and Azure account, because we believe this sort of thing should be seamless, no?

CLOUD NEWS

  • Cloud-native apps vs cloud-based applications—yes, there’s a difference - This may be the answer to that burning question you were too shy to ask. The short version? Cloud-native apps are based on services (compute, data etc.), not servers. Your cloud-based applications can be any of your legacy apps running on servers in the cloud. The main difference is in the way you design your software.
  • Akamai to acquire AWS competitor Linode for $900M - In case you were wondering what happened to Infrastructure-as-a-service, the answer is: nothing. It’s alive and kicking, as made clear by Linode, a popular alternative to the public cloud giants, who are being acquired by Akamai Technologies in their quest to become “the world’s most distributed compute platform” (their quote!), making it more affordable for your friendly neighbourhood developers.
  • Salesforce teams with AWS on direct-to-consumer streaming media solution - Netflix, Amazon Prime, and now Salesforce is taking up streaming real estate with their business-focused streaming service. And who better to provide the infrastructure for their subscription-driving initiative than long-time partner AWS?
  • Stanford University uses AI computing to cut DNA sequencing down to five hours - Add Stanford to the roster of Guinness Book of World Record holders—they’ve just clocked the fastest DNA sequencing time in history, using AI to speed up every step of genome sequencing workflow. Technology!
  • AWS brings its Local Zones mini data centers to 32 new cities - Look out—these smaller scale data centres are coming in hot to 26 new countries. Until now, these Local Zones had only been available in the US, but all developers deserve low latency, right?

  • Examining the covidtests.gov architecture - How did the US government build a service that scales for use by millions of users? The cloud of course! Take a look at this breakdown of the architecture of the site that is sending COVID tests to individual households—and looking quite promising at that!
  • Google Cloud to offer up to $100K in support for early-stage startups - While Google has been active at the enterprise level in recent years, they’re turning their focus back to being there for startups, which, in addition to providing a good amount of funding, includes their Google for Startups Cloud Program for those looking to get off the ground and into the cloud.
  • Three Cloud Trends to Watch in 2022 - DevOps shines a light on trends for this year that include the rise of alternative vendors, industry-specific cloud ecosystems, and a security focus on software supply chains in this to-the-point forecast. Keep ahead of the game!
